Yes, I am afraid to say that is correct – although why he chose to invent these details is itself an interesting tale. All we know is that she was considered ‘young and lovely’ by Elizabeth’s tutor Roger Ascham, and good looking – if not exceptionally so – by others. We don’t know anything about her height or hair colour.

Leanda – are there any detailed contemporary descriptions of Jane? I thought I had read elsewhere that she was short and that she was given chopines (the platform shoes of the day) to make her more visible to the people in processions. But other than the ubiquitous Tudor red hair, I don’t remember much else.

Dear Claire, I have discovered that the description of Jane by a Genoise merchant was a 20th century fraud. I discuss this in the US edition of The Sisters Who Would be Queen and in the UK paperback, to be published on March 4th.
